The Homeschooling Choice: A Personal Tale from Guam

Legal Matters

Every parent wants to provide the best education for their children, leading many to explore homeschooling as an alternative. We share our story and the reasons behind our choice to homeschool Megaera, our daughter who has now transitioned successfully to the University of Guam.

Why We Chose to Homeschool

Homeschooling is not a decision made lightly. For us, the choice centered around Megaera's desire, the capacity of schools in Guam to meet her needs as an exceptionally bright student, our enjoyment of time spent with her, and concerns about bullying, sexual harassment, and the presence of drugs in schools.

Concerns with Social Skills and Homeschooling

The worry that homeschooled children may lack social skills is a common one. However, through homeschooling, we found that Megaera developed friendships with people of various ages, resisting negative peer pressure while maintaining self-esteem.

Implementing a Flexible Study Schedule

Homeschooling meant adapting to the needs of our child. Megaera benefited from a flexible schedule, allowing her to dive deeply into subjects of interest and balance her learning over time. This adaptability and focus on problem-solving prepared her well for her future academic endeavors.

Creating Our Curriculum

While there are many commercial materials available, we chose to craft a curriculum tailored to Megaera’s interests. This hands-on approach included real-world observation and analysis, foundational in fostering her intellectual curiosity and reasoning abilities.

Physical Education at Home

Traditional sports were not Megaera's interest, so we incorporated activities like swimming, hiking, and snorkeling. These not only kept her physically active but also connected to the natural environment of Guam.

Many wonder how homeschooled children fare upon entering college. In our experience, gradual exposure to the university environment and active participation in coursework equipped Megaera with the necessary skills to excel at the University of Guam.

Homeschooling and Obtaining a Diploma

Securing a high school diploma while homeschooling can be attained through various methods such as educational bridge programs, homeschool organizations, or the GED. In Megaera's case, a bridge organization evaluated her comprehensive portfolio and awarded her a diploma.

The Result: Prepared for Higher Education

Our daughter's homeschooling journey concluded with her thriving in a university setting, showcasing that alternative education paths can lead to success in higher academia and beyond.

Integrating Travel into the Homeschooling Experience

Homeschooling can naturally incorporate travel, enabling students to gain real-world experience and cultural knowledge. In regions like Guam, where the natural landscape and cultural heritage are rich, the combination of education and exploration is seamless. Families might find themselves staying in accommodations that offer the comforts of home while they delve into learning about local wildlife, history, or art, further enriching the homeschooling journey.
